The newest art unit we had was artists communicate, in which we had to communicate a certain idea or theme to people. The idea we were given to communicate was identity. The idea of identity seems pretty straight forward it's who you are, or who you identify with. However when you dig deeper the idea of identity is very very complex. Identity is a very big idea, and in that idea there are several different concepts if identity. You have the concept that identity changes with time, or that people will try to change your identity. Another concept is that other people will perceive you differently than you perceive your self. I really like that concept, so I chose to communicate that in my art work. A second concept I used was the fact that people put on a mask when they're out in public, and act differently than they would at home.
The challenge now was to figure out how to communicate all those concepts in one art piece. I finally decided on drawing my face with a mask on it. On the mask I would write different words, from friends and family, describing me. I used a grid drawing for the face and added the mask on free hand. I'm really happy with how this piece turned out. I think I accurately conveyed the concept of identity that I chose. I captured everything I wanted to, and it looks almost exactly like the picture in my head.
