When I found out we were going to the North Carolina Museum of Art I was very excited. I went to the MC Escher and da Vinci's Codex special exhibits there last Friday, and didn't really enjoy them. There were far too many people there for my taste, and I didn't really get to enjoy the art. However I had an amazing time looking at the other art in the museum, so I was very excited for this trip. I didn't get a chance to look in the newer part of the museum so I'm very happy that that's where we spent all of our time. I was inspired by several pieces there, but others didn't inspire me at all.
One of the pieces that really inspired me was "Six Women" by Alex Katz. I really liked how you were invited into this intimate moment in these people's lives. You can clearly tell who is having a conversation with who and you can tell who is friends with who. I also liked how this piece had a cinematic or movie-like feel.
A piece that I thought was interesting was "Group Three" by Sarah Cain. I thought it was a cool idea when I first saw it, but I didn't really have a huge reaction with the piece, until I read about it. the description states that she painted all of these on dollar bills. That blew me away, and I had a big reaction to this piece after that. I was amazed that she would just 'waste' a dollar bill like that. I also enjoyed how the pieces didn't seem to fit together until you learned that they were all painted on dollar bills.
Oone piece that didn't give me a reaction was "Berkeley no. 8" by Richard Diebenkorn. I looked at this piece for a while and I had no reaction to it. I have no idea what he was trying to accomplish with this piece, or even what he was trying to convey. There wasn't even a good description with the piece, so I couldn't try to understand what he was doing.
I thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the art museum and was inspired by several pieces. My favorite was "Six Women" and I will be basing my teens inspired project on that.
