"Is art without meaning decoration?" This article brings up an excellent point about art and the meaning it holds. I don't think that everyone who looks at a piece of art will think it has the same meaning or any meaning at all. For example I recently visited the Nation Gallery of Art in Washington DC and got the chance to observe some very famous art pieces. Everyone always speaks very highly of these pieces, but some of them I just didn't understand. I felt nothing whilst looking at most of them. None of the paintings really touched me. To me art should reach out and grab you, it should immediately draw you in. You should feel something in your gut the first time you see it. That's what I think good art should do. I completely understand that not everyone will feel the same thing I do when looking at the same piece of art. To me art should have meaning, it should mean something to you when you make it, or to someone when they look at it. This meaning doesn't have to be good, but I think it should be powerful. To me the more meaning and the more powerful emotions you evoke with your art the better your art is. In conclusion I think all art has meaning, just because you don't feel anything while looking at it doesn't mean there's no meaning there, also just because you can't find a meaning that doesn't make it decoration. Art is up for interpretation and that means people can feel different things and call it different things, but true art is never decoration and decoration is not true art.
